In recent years, the increased demand for dynamic management of network resources in modern computer networks in general and in today's data centers in particular has resulted in a new promising architecture, in which a more flexible controlling functionalities can be achieved with high level of abstraction. In software defined networking (SDN) architecture, a central management of the forwarding elements (i.e. switches and routers) is accomplished by a central unit, which can be programmed directly to perform fundamental networking tasks or implementing any other additional services. Combining both central management and network programmability, opens the door to employ more advanced techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI) in order to deal with high-demand and rapidly-changing networks. In this study, we provide a detailed overview of current efforts and recent advancements to include AI in SDN-based networks.
