In telecommunications, network sustainability as a requirement is closely related to equitably serving the population residing at locations that can most appropriately be described as remote. The first four generations of mobile communication ignored the remote connectivity requirements, and the fifth generation is addressing it as an afterthought. However, sustainability and its social impact are being positioned as key drivers of sixth generation's (6G) standardization activities.
